Positive Behaviour for Learning
One of our school priorities for Kuluin 2025 is to increase student engagement and clarity of rules embedding the principles of Positive Behaviour for Learning and inclusive practices. Strategies to support this focus include collaboratively reviewing the school approach to supporting behaviour and promoting engagement using One School behaviour incident data. We are refining our Tier 2 and Tier 3 support model to ensure capability building and Mr Fittler Deputy Principal Year 3-5 has greatly assisted our review process due to his extensive experience in multi-tiered systems of support. Gula Gold is used across the school.
There are numerous advantages of a fast and frequent reward system:
- An organised and consistent way to recognise students who meet our school’s behaviour expectations
- Research shows that by reinforcing appropriate behaviour, we increase the likelihood that it will happen again
- Acknowledging what students are doing well helps build positive relationships between adults and students
In the last week of term 1 there will be a whole school reward that our students can look forward to when we meet our target – 45 000 Gula Gold. This will be linked to group experiences/reward events – this is an inclusionary approach, builds connection and a positive culture.
P-2 Gula Gold Celebration – Disco, popcorn free dress
Year 3-6 Gula Gold Celebration – Movie, popcorn, free dress

At Kuluin we are extremely proud of the high levels of behaviour that our students display. Each Monday every class throughout the school is taught the expectation for the week to reinforce their learning. As a school we teach our students about our school rules:
Be Safe
Be Respectful
Be a Learner
We acknowledge the students who consistently do the right thing through our school reward system. We also teach our students important life skills such as cooperation, social skills, turn taking and how to resolve problems. Positive role modelling from all adults has a significant impact on the way in which our students react to certain situations. Social Emotional Learning lessons are also embedded into the curriculum.
Kuluin State School has an active Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Committee and Student Support Committee. This allows us to implement whole school systems and to also focus on individual case management support for specific students. Our school values and responds to parent input into school direction. We employ a range of specialised staff in the areas of student engagement, learning support, special education provision, psychology, guidance and chaplaincy to support the unique needs of Kuluin students. Please contact the school if you would like further information.
Deputy Principal Update
Jess Thompson will continue as A/Deputy Principal for the rest of the year with a possibility of extension.
Pete Fittler will continue as A/Deputy Principal until the end of term 3 with a possibility of extension.

Staffing update - thankyou Mr Wayne and Miss Julie
Mr Wayne is taking extended leave in term 2. One behalf of Kuluin State School, we say a heartfelt thank you to someone who has been an integral part of our school community for the past 19 years-our incredible Grounds and Facilities Officer, Mr Wayne.
They say first impressions count, and thanks to Mr Wayne, our school has always made a great one. From the moment you walk through our gates, you can see the care and dedication he puts into our school-the beautifully kept gardens, the pristine green ovals, and the spotless grounds.
But beyond that, it's the warm smile on his face and the friendly greeting he shares with everyone that truly makes a difference. I can picture Mr Wayne on his tractor greeting people and chatting away. You will see Mr Wayne on the wellbeing mural outside the library - he's the one smiling to people on his tractor.
Mr Wayne isn't just the person who keeps our school looking fantastic-he's someone who connects with our students, takes pride in his work, and ensures that this school is a place we can all be proud of.
Whether he's mowing the lawns, fixing something behind the scenes, or having a chat with a student, his impact is everywhere.
After 19 years of dedication, Mr Wayne, it's time for you to enjoy a well-earned break-Mr Wayne has two sons and grandchildren so he plans on spending more time with them. Mr Wayne also told me he plans on doing toad trips to visit his friends.
Whatever comes next, we wish you all the best. On behalf of everyone at Kuluin State School-thank you Mr Wayne!
Mr Duncan will be taking on this important full-time role in our school and Mr Murray will continue to help out on a casual basis.
Miss Julie has accepted an Administration Officer position closer to her current home. We will miss Julie’s warmth and care towards our students, staff and families as she has been the front office face for our school over the past few years. Mrs Tanja Boskov will be replacing Julie.

Amazing Teaching and Learning in Years 5 & 6!
This term, students in 56S, 6H, 6C, and 6A have been engaging with Daily Literacy Reviews (DLRs)—a structured approach that reinforces key literacy skills in a fun and effective way.
Through DLRs, students revisit essential literacy concepts, building confidence and fluency in reading, writing, spelling, and grammar. Teachers have noted remarkable improvements in student learning, with increased engagement and stronger literacy outcomes.
We are excited to see how this ongoing practice translates into their upcoming assessments and beyond!
Important Update – Whole School Performance
Unfortunately, the scheduled performance of Zanna & The Lost Code has been postponed.
While we are disappointed, we look forward to providing students with this engaging learning experiences later in the year. Thank you for your understanding.

Respectful Relationships Education
This year, beginning in Term 2, your child will learn about the topic of respectful relationships. Respectful relationships education helps shape the future of the world we live in by giving children and young people the skills, experiences and confidence to lead healthy relationships and productive lives.
Our school, like all Queensland state schools, has been implementing the Australian Curriculum since 2012. The Australian Curriculum includes respectful relationships education in Health and Physical Education (HPE). We aim to teach children and young people how to develop behaviours and attitudes that promote healthy, safe and respectful relationships. We further aim to foster learning about personal and social capabilities, and ethical and intercultural understandings. The Australian Curriculum is publicly available online at
Classroom teachers will deliver this learning so that it is relevant, age-appropriate, and connects authentically with the real-life contexts within which our students learn, live and grow.
Through respectful relationships education, children and young people will learn about:
- personal and social awareness, supporting students to understand themselves and others in different social situations.
- respectful interactions, supporting students to understand and practise strategies for relating to and interacting with others respectfully (offline and online)
- protective behaviours, supporting students to understand and practice preventative, proactive and responsive strategies to keep themselves and others safe in offline and online environments.
Prep to Year 2
Students develop the capacity to understand and self-regulate their emotions in ways that account for their feelings and the feelings of others. They also develop skills to initiate social interactions. The content explores the people who are important to these young students and develops their capacity to initiate and maintain respectful relationships in different contexts, including at school, at home and in the classroom. Students explore their own sense of self and the factors that contribute to and influence their identities.
Years 3 to 6
The Respect program's focus broadens to include the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support students' wellbeing and that of their family and friends. Personal and social skills take on an increasing importance as they look to family, peers, and the community for role models. Students begin to explore personal and social factors that support and contribute to their identities and assist in the management of emotional responses in a range of situations over time. Students develop knowledge, understanding and skills that help them build and maintain respectful relationships.
Further information about what students will be learning or how you can access information to support regular conversations about healthy relationships with your children are available by visiting the Respectful Relationships Education Hub at https://learningplace.eq.edu.au/cx/resources/file/a0ba1327-a69e-474d-a220-acfff7542960/1/about/learn.html. Message from your local police
As you are all aware, parking around the school is limited, local police together with the School and council work hard to provide a safe area for the children to be dropped off and picked up.
The Loading Zone for drop off and pick up at the front of the school to work efficiently requires cooperation from all parents to ensure quick movement of vehicles through the area. Please note that the 2 minute loading zones are designed for the driver to remain in the vehicle whilst the children load or unload. It is not a waiting area you can only stop here once the children are on the footpath. If you do leave your vehicle, no matter how quick you are you are committing an offence - PLEASE NOTE These areas are designed to keep the vehicles moving and to provide a safe place for our children to get in or out of cars.
Please do
- Plan your trip to avoid arrival at peak times
- Pick-up or drop-off children via the car’s kerb doors in the designated zones
- Drive out safely
- If your children are not at your arranged spot, go around the block and try again
- Wait to you children are secure in seatbelts before driving off.
Do not
- Stop on Yellow Lines
- Allow Children to get into your vehicle whilst you are illegally parked.
- Get out of your vehicle
- Double park
- Arrive early in the afternoon and sit in the zone
- Use staff parking areas
